The Next Thing (TNT)

The Next Thing Poster

This was an informational poster about the support group, The Next Thing (TNT). It describes TNT as a “comfortable space for LGBTQ students of color to chill, vent, and discuss issues to race and sexual orientation.” Also, the document informed the readers that it was formed in the fall of 1991 and that members met bimonthly. It ends with a contact numbers of the coordinators.

We chose to highlight this on our website because it shows how Brown students were aware of the intersectionalities between issues (in this case, of race and sexuality). Moreover, it showed how the university was taking a step to making sure that Brown is an inclusive environment by allowing the students to form such support groups. Likewise, this may also suggest that the queer people of color at Brown was starting to increase, thus, there was a demand for peer and staff support. This highlights the fact that as the University tries to diversify its community, there are new challenges that arise because conflict of interests are inherent. The formation of TNT is a response to that friction in order for the queer people of color felt included and manage to thrive at Brown as opposed to leaving the university.

What do YOU think?

Why separate the people of color?

This brings out the different intersectionalities of one’s identity. Thus, the intersections of one’s struggles. Also, on page 6 of Anti-Capitalism, Adamovsky writes, “class oppression can be combined with racial or gender oppression, to reinforce oppression.” Are issues of race, gender, sexuality, and class always are INHERENTLY tied together? Is this why people potential activists get discouraged because it is “TOO HUGE OF A PROBLEM?”
